AIRPORT / PORTS trench drain applications

In general, airports require trench drains that can handle heavy loads and high volumes of water, as the runways and taxiways need to remain clear and safe for aircraft. Trench drains with load classes ranging from A to F are typically used, with Class F being the most robust and most durable option.

The materials used for airport trench drains must be able to withstand the harsh environment of an airport, including exposure to jet fuel and other chemicals. Trench drains made from polymer concrete, fiberglass, and stainless steel are popular, as they resist corrosion and offer high strength and durability.

Ports also require trench drains to handle heavy loads and high volumes of water, but the load classes needed may vary depending on the specific location and the types of vehicles and equipment being used. For example, a port that primarily handles cargo containers will have different load requirements than a marina that accommodates recreational boats.

Like airport trench drains, port trench drains must also be able to withstand exposure to chemicals, saltwater, and other corrosive materials. Materials such as galvanized steel, fiberglass, and precast concrete are commonly used for port trench drains due to their strength and resistance to corrosion.

In addition to load class and material, other essential factors to consider when designing airport and port trench drains include grating type, slope, and outlet location. The grating must handle heavy vehicles and equipment’s weight and pressure while providing adequate drainage capacity. The slope of the trench must be steep enough to allow water to flow freely but not so steep that it causes erosion or other issues. The outlet’s location must also be carefully chosen to ensure that the water is discharged safely and efficiently.
